AED (Automated External Defibrillator)
SD Project Heart Beat
San Diego State University has partnered with San Diego Project Heart Beat and provides over 50 AEDs on campus. An Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable defibrillator that can be used in the event of sudden cardiac arrest. AEDs are available in 43 locations around campus as well as each SDSU Police car. For a mobile view of each AED at SDSU download the Pulse Point AED app to your iPhone or Android.
The AED machines, housed in metal or plastic cabinets around campus, can be used to monitor a person’s heartbeat and determine if the heart’s rhythm is normal. Defibrillators can also deliver life-saving electric shocks to restart the heart or correct an irregular heartbeat. AEDs are designed to be used by non-medical personnel, so cardiac arrest victims don’t have to wait for emergency crews to arrive to receive potentially life-saving treatment.
Should you need to deploy an AED here’s what to do:
- Call 911
- Open the AED and follow the audible prompts.
- Continue following prompts until safety personnel arrive.
NOTE: CPR/AED Lunch and Learn classes are offered twice a semester. They are hosted by the Emergency Services Department and instructed by San Diego Project Heart Beat.
