Clinical/Counseling Therapist
COUNSELING & PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES
Full-time permanent tenure track position (12-month).
SALARY: $4,662 - $4, 862 mo. Commensurate with experience, knowledge, and skills.
The primary mission of Counseling & Psychological Services (C&PS) is to provide services to students and the university community that support and enhance the education of the whole person, as well as nurture a healthy and productive learning-centered campus environment. All C&PS services are provided and designed to promote academic excellence and retention at SDSU. Counseling & Psychological Services provides, either directly or through collaboration and referral, a variety of counseling services, (e.g., individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, short-term psychotherapy), assessment and evaluation, faculty and staff consultation, and professional training/supervision, consistent with the educational mission of the university.
RESPONSIBILITIES: This position will involve the provision of the following: The full range of individual and group psychological services to students from a wide range of multicultural backgrounds presenting complex psychosocial, social, personal, and family problems; crisis and trauma response debriefing; urgent assessment and referral services for students requiring off campus treatment; consultation, prevention education, and training services to individuals (e.g., Students, Faculty, Staff, Parents, Administrators) campus groups (e.g., Student Clubs, Residence Hall Communities, Fraternities, Sororities) and organizational units (e.g., Associated Students, University Colleges, Academic Departments, Student Affairs Offices). Possible future opportunities include coordination of peer education, supervision and training of interns, and classroom instruction.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Knowledge of and experience making discerning judgments regarding complex ethical and legal issues. Strong clinical assessment skills. Ability to establish effective working collaborations between individuals and groups representing different cultures, interest groups, and/or departments. Ability to consult effectively with faculty, staff, administrators, and parents regarding how to work with distressed students.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: Candidates must possess an appropriate terminal degree: for example, a doctorate in behavioral sciences, counseling, psychology or a specific related academic field, or a master’s degree in social work, marriage and family therapy, or a specific related academic field (e.g., Psy.D., Ph.D, MSW, MFT). Candidates must also possess a California license or be license-eligible to practice Psychology in California (license must be obtained within 18 months of date of hire), or possess a California license in Marriage and Family Therapy or Clinical Social Work. Experience and clinical effectiveness with:
- cross- cultural counseling approaches with ethnically and culturally diverse clients and communities.
- time-limited/short-term treatment approaches, with a broad range of complex personal and interpersonal issues.
- crisis/suicide intervention and trauma response debriefing.
SPECIALIZED SKILLS DESIRED: Experience and/or interest in one or more of the following areas are desirable: Eating Disorders; Men’s Issues, Group Treatment Approaches, Motivational Interviewing. Previous university counseling center experience is desirable.
