Injuries Requiring Emergency TreatmentMost injuries do not require emergency treatment. In those non-life threatening situations, the employee must be referred to one of the Sharp Rees-Stealy, Occupational Health Services Facilities listed below, unless the employee has pre-designated their primary physician, in writing, prior to the industrial injury. All life-threatening injuries should be referred to: Alvarado Hospital Emergency Room Dial “911” from any campus phone, then contact Environmental Health and Safety at (619) 594-6778. [return] Control of Medical TreatmentThe California Labor Code states that the employer has control over the employee’s medical treatment, for the first 30 days following an injury. After 30 days from the date the injury was reported, an injured employee may be treated by a physician of their choice. The employee must submit a written request to the university claims adjuster: Sedgwick CMS An employee may designate initial medical treatment with their own physician, provided they have submitted a Notice of Physician’s Pre-designation Form If an employee goes to a physician not affiliated with SDSU Health Services, Sharp Rees-Stealy Occupational Medical or Alvarado Hospital, the university cannot guarantee that their medical bills are covered under workers’ compensation.
