Full-time temporary position anticipated to end on or before December 31, 2005, with possibility for reappointment and/or permanency.

SALARY:  $2,777 - $4,166 mo. Commensurate with experience, knowledge, and skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  Under the general supervision of the Head of Serials Unit, the Serials Unit is responsible for maintaining all order and fiscal records for acquired or contractually accessed serials materials, ordering, receiving, checking in, claiming, and maintaining related OPAC records, processing renewal and invoices for payment, maintaining and reviewing licensing agreements; preparing serials for binding, sorting, and distributing the Library’s mail. The primary responsibilities of the incumbent include but are not limited to: periodical check-in, serial records and library database maintenance, electronic journal access management, keeping Serials Unit statistics and website maintenance.

QUALIFICATIONS: Must have three years library assistant I experience OR two years library assistant I experience and two years/60 semester units of postsecondary education OR one year library assistant experience and four years/120 semester units of postsecondary education. Working knowledge of library terminology, general bibliographic forms and structures, library computer applications.  Ability to apply rules in accordance with policy, regulations and procedures under varying circumstances; provide standard information on library policies and procedures to library users.  Working knowledge of the activities, policies, and procedures of the area to which the position is assigned and how that area interacts with other parts of the library. General knowledge of computer applications in the library; the academic library setting; the library’s collection; the LC classification system; and the library catalog system, preferably INNOPAC Millennium, our online library public access catalog. Must have the ability to work independently using relevant knowledge to determine the best course of action; interpret, modify, and verify library records within established rules and procedures; understand and operate library computer systems and use the resulting output; understand and interpret library rules and bibliographic standards and apply them with accuracy.

SPECIALIZED REQUIREMENTS: Working knowledge of the Innovative Interfaces Millennium serials module (specifically the Checkin and Routing functions). Must have knowledge of serials publishing patterns; knowledge of MARC21 bibliographic format; ability to interpret chronology and enumeration patterns for periodicals and newspapers; ability to input bibliographic and checkin data accurately using the Millennium serials module; knowledge of departmental procedures and criteria for checking in serials material; ability to recognize and report publisher changes and supplements that accompany material for checkin; knowledge of and ability to understand and use MARC Holdings format in its latest revision. Experience using MS Word and MS Excel and the world wide web. Must have skill in webpage creation and maintenance. Must have the ability to use a typewriter and/or word processor. Broad paraprofessional knowledge of library operations.  Ability to work accurately with attention to detail. Ability to read and write English at a level appropriate to the position as well as verbally communicate effectively using standard English.
