Full-Time, Tenure Track, Assistant/Associate Professor
Recreation & Tourism Management Program

POSITION:  SUSTAINABLE TOURISM - Full-time, academic year, tenure track Assistant Professor, Recreation & Tourism Management Program of the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at San Diego State University, San Diego, California.  Beginning date is August 15, 2008.  The successful candidate applicant is expected to spearhead the new, innovative programmatic curriculum and research focus on sustainability in tourism and recreation.  Applicants must have the ability to teach and develop tourism courses (including field-trips) that position the program as a leading educational institution in tourism and recreation sustainability.  The applicant should also be willing to teach other appropriate program-related courses.  Examples of potential courses include sustainability-related tourism planning, tourism economics, tourism marketing, ecotourism, and cultural tourism.  Duties include, but are not limited to, supervision of undergraduate senior projects and academic advising.  Applicants must be committed to conducting research using innovative theoretical and methodological approaches involving cross-disciplinary and collaborative applications that result in the creation and implementation of innovative strategies for tourism and recreation sustainability.  As a part of professional development, the successful candidate is expected to participate in scholarly activities and carry out a focused area of scholarship (research, grant writing, publications, presentations) in the area of sustainability.  Service to the university community and local, state, and national/international tourism organizations is expected.  Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Doctorate degree by the starting date.
  • At least one degree in tourism or related discipline.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of sustainability through course work and/or practical experience.
  • Evidence of activity in an innovative area of sustainabilty research.
  • Demonstrated interest in teaching undergraduate curriculum.
  • Demonstrated interest in applying information and communication technologies in the classroom and the overall program.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social and cultural diversity.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with mapping software and/or innovative statistical software.
  • Knowledge of Learning Management Systems, such as Blackboard.
  • Ability to secure external grant funding.
  • Practical and/or research experience in tourism management.
  • International educational and/or professional experience.
  • Fluency in foreign language.
  • Experience working with tourism agencies, organizations and businesses.
  • Experience with cross-disciplinary and collaborative academic programs.

DEPARTMENT:  The Recreation and Tourism Management (RTM) program, in the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts, at San Diego State University (SDSU) offers a B.S. in Recreation Administration.  The RTM program has recently restructured its curriculum to offer innovative teaching and professional development opportunities for faculty and exciting experiential-learning opportunities for students.  With the unifying focus of sustainability, the RTM program is committed to the teacher-scholar model which advocates Student Learning Outcomes and community partnerships to enhance course-design and research. 

A relatively small program with three tenure-track faculty, RTM is currently in a growth-mode as a result of its recent incorporation within the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, one of the biggest fundraisers and community-partnership generators for SDSU.  The new organizational structure for the RTM program has brought with it tremendous opportunities for faculty development through research partnerships and support and enriching student experiences through both University- and community-supported activities and programs.

The RTM program at SDSU is accredited by NRPA/AAPAR and offers areas of study in Recreation Management, Outdoor Resources Management, and Sustainable Tourism Management.  SDSU has recently been named the number one small research university in the nation, according to a new ranking index based on the Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index (FSP Index).  It is located in Southern California where tourism and the hospitality industry are dynamic and growing.  SDSU, one of 23 California State University campuses, has an enrollment of nearly 33,000 students and is one of the largest universities in the western United States.  It offers bachelor's degrees in 81 areas, the master's in 73, and the joint-doctorate in 13.  Located in a large and ethnically diverse metropolitan center bordering Mexico and on the Pacific Rim, the university uses the social, cultural, ecological, scientific and technical resources of this region to enrich its teaching and research programs. In addition, the region offers many unique opportunities in recreation, hospitality management, and tourism services.

 


 

Full-Time Faculty Position
Emphasis in Meetings and Events Operations Management

VPAA#2008/09–1

POSITION: A full-time, faculty position beginning in academic year 2008-2009, in the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, with an emphasis in Meetings and Events Operations  Management. (MEOM)

RESPONSIBILITIES: Teach classes in the area of MEOM, and other related hospitality and/or business disciplines; perform scholarly work in publishing, research, and grant writing; provide service to the university and community; and assist with the continued development of the hospitality management degree within the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management with emphases in Event Management; Hotel Operations and Management; and Restaurant Operations. Preference will be given to applicants with actual experience or research in the hospitality industry and/or meeting and events operations and management.

QUALIFICATIONS: A dynamic and articulate teacher and researcher desiring to join a team of highly motivated and committed professionals dedicated to preparing students and practitioners in innovating the hospitality and tourism marketplace. Earned doctorate in hospitality management, business administration, or other business related field is required. Teaching experience at the university level, demonstrated professional growth including research and publications, and service experience oriented to the professional field of hospitality management are also required.  Relevant hospitality industry experience is required.  A commitment to working in a multi-cultural environment with students from diverse backgrounds is essential.

SALARY AND RANK: Salary and rank commensurate with credentials and experience as specified in qualifications above.

The School of Hospitality & Tourism Management currently has five full‑time tenure‑track faculty, an Executive Director and additional support from several full- and part‑time faculty.
