Q. What
is the bridge class? Casual worker?
A. The Bridge
Student Assistant is class code 1874 and is in the salary schedule under E99.
Q. If we choose to pay at continuing
student (but not enrolled in the Summer session) as a 'Bridge Class' does their
pay remain the same minus the deductions?
A. Yes, their pay could remain the
same. Please speak with your Employment
and Compensation representative concerning pay scales concerning this
classification.
Q. If any of our student assistants have a
work study grant for the Fall 2003 semester, but are not taking any summer
session classes, are they exempt from the deductions by virtue of their having
a work study grant for Fall 2003?
A. If the student is going to be paid out
of student assistant funds (instead of work study funds), the student would not
qualify for the exemption. If the
student is enrolled in the summer, then that student would qualify for the
exemption. If the student is not
enrolled in the summer, then you could place the student in this bridge class.
Q. What is the percentage of the student
assistants' earnings that will be deducted for the retirement plan and
Medicare?
A. 7.5% of all earnings to the retirement
plan and 1.45% to medicare taxation.
Q. For those student assistants working in
May, should we submit two time sheets: one for the period May 1 through May 21,
for which no deductions should be taken, and a second for the period May 22
though May 31, during which they will be working under the bridge class?
A. You may submit a time sheet through May
31. The regulations give the schools a
period where the student would qualify for the exemption in between sessions.
