Child Safety Seat Inspections

If your child is less than 6 years old or less than 60 pounds, they MUST be properly secured in an approved child restraint (car seat or booster) in the back seat of your car.

The SDSU Police Department is dedicated to preventing injuries to children every time they ride in a vehicle. Car seat inspections are free to all SDSU affiliates and can be scheduled by calling Capt. Lamine Secka at 619-594-1991.  Our inspections allow parents and caregivers to have their car seats checked for safety and proper installation by a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician.  The car seat is checked for any recalls, proper usage, and proper fit for the child.  Parents are active participants in the installation process to insure they will be able to secure the child properly every time. Parents, grandparents, and caregivers are encouraged to make an appointment.

Car seat safety events can also be scheduled for your department or group (such as the Children's Center) to make inspections available to everyone at a convenient time and location.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q1: How long do the inspections take?

A: Please allow approximately 45 minutes for each installation/inspections.

Q1: At what age can my child start using the vehicle safety belt?

A: Children must remain in their booster seats until they reach the maximum weight limit of the booster seat.

Q1: How long does my infant have to stay rear-facing?

A: Infants must stay rear-facing until they are at least one year old and 20 pounds. There are some seats on the market that have a higher weight limit, so you can keep them rear-facing as long as possible. It's the safer way to travel.

Q1: How do I know which car seat to choose for my child?

A: The best car seat for your child is one that properly fits your child, fits your vehicle, and one that you will use correctly every time.

Q1: How tightly should my car seat be installed?

A: The car seat should not move more than one inch side to side when pulled at the belt path.
