Patrol Division

The Patrol Division is comprised of the traditional line functions of the police department and is managed by an Operations Lieutenant. As such, most sworn personnel are assigned to this area of the department.

San Diego State University Police Department provides patrol service to the campus community and the College Area. The patrol division is the largest detail in the department with 28 officers assigned to patrol the area.

Patrol officers respond to all calls for service from on campus and the community. Some situations handled daily by patrol officers include traffic collisions, disturbances, crime reports, and inspecting suspicious persons and vehicles. Between calls for service, patrol officers spend their time maintaining high visibility on campus and in the streets enforcing traffic regulations.

SDSU Police Officers generally provide for the peace, safety, and security of persons and facilities on the university campus and those properties owned, controlled, or occupied by SDSU.

It is the function of the patrol division to provide twenty-four hour uniformed patrol coverage to all areas of the university and surrounding community.

Officers provide preventative patrols on foot, bicycle, and motor vehicles; receive, process, and investigate complaints by citizens; respond to emergencies such as crimes, accidents, injuries, illness, and fires; protect persons and property through crime prevention; arrest offenders; appear in court; provide traffic control and enforcement; attend community meetings; perform miscellaneaous services related to public health and safety; safeguard the custody and disposal of evidence and lost and found property.

The primary function of personnel assigned to patrol is to provide a uniformed response to calls for service and to act as a visible deterrent to crime. As the most visible part of the department, our officers are called upon to protect the community with customary policing methods and to provide the foundation of resources for other outreach programs to the community. The Bicycle Patrol Team provides a highly visible patrol presence, allowing for a rapid response to call-for-service, and a positive interaction between the Community and the Department.

The officers of the SDSU Police Department are deployed equally among four patrol shifts. They provide the base for several specialized liaison positions within SDSU such as Trolley Liaison, Bike Officer, Housing Liaison, Greek Life Liaison, Remote Facilities Liaison, and Alcohol Prevention Liaison.

The patrol division is staffed by 28 state-sworn police officers per 830.2 (c) PC.
