Defensive Driving

New Information - Effective August 25, 2008

Sacramento is currently not offering defensive driving classes at SDSU. All classes offered in San Diego will be downtown at the State Building. Please see the defensive driving class schedule for location, dates and times. If you are attending this class you must fill out a T-2.


The California State University Office of Risk Management requires all employees to meet required criteria before authorizing the use of university vehicles. Employees who are required to operate motorized vehicles on university business are required to be safe drivers and operate vehicles in a safe manner. Employees must have a supervisor’s permission to operate any vehicle on university business. If the employee’s position requires operation of a vehicle on university business, then approval will be contingent upon satisfying each of the following:

  1. Possession of a valid California Drivers License.

  2. Not have received more than three moving violations and/or accidents or combination thereof in the past twelve month period, in accordance with the CSU Use of University and Private Vehicles Policy GuidelinesLink to download the latest version of Adobe Reader

  3. Complete the next available CSU-approved defensive driving course and renew every four years thereafter.

  4. Entry into the Employer Pull Notice Program — Authorization for Release of Driver Record Information Form INF 1101 [rev. 9-04]Link to download the latest version of Adobe Reader

  5. Submitting a copy of the Authorization to Use Privately-owned Vehicles on State Business STD. 261 [rev. 3-95]Link to download the latest version of Adobe Reader

  6. Maintain a good and safe driving record while employed by San Diego State University.

Employees who meet all the above criteria may not drive on state business unless they have successfully completed the defensive driving course or have submitted a one-time-only Defensive Driving Waiver, (see Request for Temporary Waiver of Defensive Driving Certificate & Entry Into the Employee DMV Pull ProgramLink to download the latest version of Adobe Reader which has been approved and on file with Public Safety. This waiver will allow the employee to drive with the condition they attend the next available defensive driving class.

Those employees who drive their personal vehicle on state business more than once a month, or those who want to be reimbursed for their mileage must take the defensive driving class.

Remember, while driving a vehicle on university business, it is mandatory that you report any accident for which you are involved. The employee must submit a Vehicle Accident Report STD. 270 [rev. 2-02] Link to download the latest version of Adobe Reader and the supervisor/manger must submit a State Driver Accident Review STD. 274 [rev. 1-03] Link to download the latest version of Adobe Reader within 48 hours to the Department of Public Safety, Defensive Driving Coordinator, MC-4390.

The CSU Vehicle Use Policy describes in greater detail all requirements of driving on university business as well as the Accounts Payable Travel Manual.
