RE: Impersonation of a Police Officer

This bulletin is posted to advise you of an incident that concerns the safety of the university community. Please take all necessary precautions.

Pontiac Street at College Avenue & 63rd Street at Arosa Street

On Sunday, July 13th, 2008 at about 3:30 a.m., an SDSU student and a friend were walking in the area of Pontiac Street and College Avenue. A male in a silver or light blue van approached them and asked if they had been drinking, and told them to get in his van. The male stated he was a "Federal Agent" and showed them his uniform and a gun in a holster. They refused a ride. The male followed them to their residence on 63rd Street.

At about 4:00 a.m., another female non-SDSU student was approached on 63rd and Arosa Street by a male in a tan mini-van who shined a light on her. He asked her if she had been drinking and told her he would give her a ride home instead of arresting her. The female student got into the vehicle and was driven home. The male suspect kept her identification.

The SDSU Police Department advises all members of our community not to accept rides from strangers. If in doubt as to the identity of someone claiming to be a police officer, either dial 911 and have the agency confirm, or request a supervisor to respond.

Students are advised to walk with friends whenever possible. If traveling on campus, utilize the student escort service.

SUSPECT DESCRIPTION:

Hispanic or tanned complexion male wearing a navy blue uniform with gold badge, spiked hair; 5'-7" to 5'-9" in height and in his 30's. He may possibly be armed with an unknown handgun. Last seen driving a mini-van described as silver or light blue in color.

Anyone with information or questions should contact:

  • The SDSU Police Department at 619-594-1991
  • Or Detective Jacobsen at 619-594-1984 and reference case number 08-1196.

You can remain anonymous and even provide information via e-mail by sending your tips to <police@mail.sdsu.edu>. Case #08-1196.
