Bike Patrol
Established in 1993
In 1993, the SDSU Police Department established its Police Bicycle Patrol Team. Officers assigned to the bike team are required to attend a 40-hour training course that combines advanced riding techniques on a mountain bike and the unique enforcement opportunities afforded to officers on bike. A police officer on a bike has many advantages over traditional methods of patrol, including increased mobility, stealth, and increased visibility to pedestrians on campus. Furthermore, it enables officers to get out of the more traditional patrol car and makes them more available to members of the public.
Typically, a police bike team will cost a department a fraction of what it would cost to field the same number of traditional patrol units. On the SDSU campus, bike officers can access areas that a patrol car cannot and can be used at special events where large crowds and officer mobility are important.
The bike team is staffed by five officers and a sergeant. Officers are assigned to the bike team as a specialty position and also work regular patrol.
