SDSU Waste Reduction & Diversion Programs

San Diego State University has been recognized by the community for its waste reduction and diversion efforts.

The following programs are used to divert slightly more than 52‰ of campus waste away from landfill sites. The success of these is attributable to campus agencies, organizations, and individuals.

Construction/Demolition:
Waste generated from all construction projects on campus. Materials include concrete, asphalt, wood, sheet rock, metal and other construction materials.

Single Stream Recycling:
Mixed recycling consists of office paper, newsprint, magazines, cardboard, beverage containers, and practically everything else except food and liquids. We currently have over 150 exterior containers and over 400 interior containers for single stream recycling.

Composting:
Consists of landscaping waste, food waste, mulching and xeriscape.

Business Source Reduction:
Consists of the use of e-mail, electronic forms, and duplexing (copy machine).

SDSU Recycling Center:
A California Redemption Value (CRV) buy back center is located next to Olmeca residence hall, behind the Jack-in-the-Box restaurant. The SDSU Recycling Center accepts aluminum, glass, and plastic beverage containers. Faculty, staff, and students bring beverage containers to the recycling center and receive value back in the form of Aztec Dollars. Aztec Dollars can be used to purchase items at the campus stores or they can credit your “One Card” to be used for other activities.

Campus Property Source Reduction:
Includes equipment and surplus property auction items.

Other Recycling Programs:
Consist of automotive products, inkjet and toner cartridges, and small electronic devices.
