Safety Precautions
For safety reasons, departments which own and operate portable generators must notify the Work Control Center (ext. 4-4754) or e-mail of the following information:
- Description of generator (e.g., size, capacity, make/model number)
- Specific generator uses (e.g., for use with portable lights, lab equipment, etc.)
- Location where generator is stored
- Contact Person responsible for generator maintenance/operation
- Safety standards
When in use, the generator unit must be placed in an area with ample ventilation. When not in use, the generator and associated fuels must be stored in a manner which meets Environmental Health & Safety standards. Questions regarding safety requirements should be directed to Environmental Health & Safety (extension 4-6778).
Utility Systems
Under no circumstances may a portable generator be connected to a building utility system. This is to prevent back-feeding into a system, severely jeopardizing the safety of technicians who may be working on that system.
Power Outages
For safety reasons, the Work Control Center (ext. 4-4754 or extension 4-2802 on weekends, holidays, or weekdays after 4:30 p.m.) must be notified before generator operation during a power outage.
Maintenance / Repair
Maintenance / repair to department generators is available through Physical Plant on a cost-recovery basis by submitting a funded Service Request to the Work Control Center.
