Campus Elevators

The campus currently has over 100 elevators, dumbwaiters and wheelchair lifts in use. A licensed elevator maintenance company maintains these units with a resident elevator mechanic, and an assistant, assigned to San Diego State University 5 days per week.

Elevator Inspections

The Department of Industrial Relations, Division of Occupational Safety and Health – Elevator, Ride and Tramway Unit, inspects elevators in the State of California. The local office is located at:

DOSH Elevator Unit
7575 Metropolitan Drive, Suite 203
San Diego, CA 92108-4402
(619) 767-2050

The primary responsibilities of the DOSH Elevator Unit are to inspect new elevator installations and to investigate any accidents or mishaps with elevators. They are also responsible for the annual safety inspections for the campus elevators. They try to schedule inspections throughout the calendar year in order of permit expiration date but cannot always adhere to a regular time line.

San Diego State University has experienced many instances when the elevators have not been inspected for over a year. This is not uncommon and does not mean that the elevators on campus are not safe or well maintained.

Permits

Pursuant to the California Labor Code, § 7301, all original elevator permits are on file at the Department of Physical Plant. Copies of these permits are placed in each elevator, pursuant to the same statute, when new permits are received.

Maintenance/Repair

Physical Plant administers the general service contract for elevator maintenance on campus. Maintenance / repair problems should be directed to the Work Control Center (ext. 44754) or e-mail.

Emergencies

Please report emergencies immediately to the Work Control Center (ext. 44754) or e-mail or Public Safety (ext. 41991). Elevator occupants may call Public Safety via the emergency communication system inside the elevator. Occupants trapped inside elevators should not be left unattended. University personnel may only attempt access to elevator hoistways in the event of life-threatening emergencies.

Earthquake Switches

Earthquake switches, susceptible to power loss triggering, may be reset by Physical Plant electricians only.
