Campus Waste Per Capita

How Does it Work?

Last year the state of California changed the way that we report campus recycling and trash from an annual tonnage system to a per capita system.

In previous years the campus reported all waste to the state based on actual tonnage of recycling and trash. Based on the trash and recycling numbers we arrived at a diversion rate. The campus diversion rate is over 50‰. Switching to a per capita reporting method means that we will only report trash numbers divided by the number of students, faculty, and staff in order to arrive at a pounds per day average.

What Does It All Mean?

As the campus adds new waste reduction programs, and expands existing programs, the per capita trash number will go down!

Campus Per Capita Waste Report
Year Trash Tonnage Per Capita (lbs. per person per day)
2008 5,437 8.1
2009 3,871 5.7
