Department Overview

General Information

Maintenance

Physical Plant offers a comprehensive system of planned / programmed maintenance and tracks deferred maintenance.

Aside from the visibility of services provided by custodial, grounds and trades staff, the major point of contact for the campus community is the Work Control Center. The Work Control Center coordinates scheduling and completion of campus maintenance and construction projects, both ongoing and customer-generated.

All campus services are performed with in-house staff, the major exceptions being outsourcing contracts for:

  • Industrial hygiene consulting for asbestos
  • Elevator maintenance
  • Refuse disposal
  • Cogeneration turbine maintenance
  • Construction on special projects or repairs (as needed)

Budget

Physical Plant operational budget provides coverage for salaries, supplies and services. Current expenditures include annual service contracts for elevator maintenance, refuse disposal, pest control, co-generation turbine maintenance and campus security systems, among others.

Points of interest

SDSU's physical environment includes approximately 280 acres on the main campus and another 8 acres at the Imperial Valley Campus site.

Custodial staff service over 2.7 million square feet of floor space, while the total square footage services by building maintenance staff exceeds 5 million square feet including the Imperial Valley campus and facilities at the Mount Laguna Observatory site.

The campus uses approximately 54 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, of which 18 million are produced by the in-house cogeneration plant.

The department maintains a central warehouse and supports mover 300 vehicles, emergency generators and other motorized equipment.

The Housing Service area maintains seven traditional residence halls, one apartment-style complex and ancillary facilities.
