Physical Plant Custodial staff service over 3 million square feet of campus floor space. Most staff work a daytime shift from early morning to midday, with alternate crews covering afternoon and evening shifts. Thus, custodial shifts provide virtually 24-hour service in support of all faculty, staff and student facilities.

In addition, Custodial Services provides table and chair delivery, and setup for special events on campus, including our customary involvement in yearly Commencement Services. Custodial staff are also very active in campus sustainability, making sure recyclable waste is disposed of in appropriate containers.

Classrooms and Laboratories

Classrooms and laboratories receive the following daily service:

• Trash emptied
• Chalkboards/rails cleaned
• Chalk replenished
• Desks straightened/desk tops washed
• Floors dusted/wet mopped
• Lab counters/sinks cleaned
• Soap/paper supplies replenished
• Window ledges dusted
• Burned out bulbs/tubes replaced

It is the responsibility of the department to clean lab benches & tables where experiments are being conducted and areas where laboratory animals are kept.

Rest Rooms

Rest rooms receive the following daily service:

• Sinks, toilets, and urinals cleaned and sanitized
• Soap & paper supplies replenished
• Partitions & mirrors cleaned
• Trash emptied
• Floors mopped
• Graffiti removed
• Burned out bulbs & florescent tubes replaced

Passageways

Entrances, stairwells, and corridors receive the following daily service:

• Floors swept & mopped
• Carpets vacuumed
• Exterior entrances swept
• Door mats vacuumed
• Cigarette urns emptied
• Glass store fronts cleaned
• Elevator interiors cleaned

Office and Public Areas

Office and public areas receive the following weekly service:

• Trash emptied, floors dusted and wet mopped (three times a week)
• Recycling bins emptied, carpets vacuumed (twice a week)
• Ledges, vents, counters, table tops, chairs, desks, and file cabinets dusted (once a week)

Books or papers on table or desk tops are not rearranged or otherwise disturbed.

Facility Lockup

Campus facilities are regularly locked at 10 p.m. and opened again at 6:30 a.m., Monday through Friday. This schedule may vary during academic breaks. Requests or inquiries regarding facility access should be directed to Public Safety (ext. 4-1991).
