If you can’t work while you are recovering from a job injury or illness, you may be eligible to receive temporary disability payments. Temporary disability payments are two-thirds of your average weekly pay, within minimums and maximums set by state law (depending on your date of disability). This benefit is not subject to federal, state, social security and Medicare taxes. Payments are not made for the first three days you are off the job unless you are hospitalized overnight or cannot work for more than 14 days.
Temporary Disability payments will be provided until you are able to return to work (depending on your date of disability). For injuries on or after January 1, 2008, the aggregate Temporary Disability benefit will cap at 104 weeks within a five-year period from the date of injury.
Individuals appointed as faculty, staff, student assistants or student volunteers (who have an approved volunteer form on file) are covered as an employee for purposes of Workers’ Compensation; however, Workers’ Compensation coverage is not provided to students participating in university-sponsored The Center for Community Engagement programs. San Diego State University, and the community agency where the student is providing service, are responsible for developing an agreement that articulates liability for Workers’ Compensation and other insurance coverage prior to the students’ placements.
