Attention Benefits Eligible Employees:
On September 19, 2011, CalPERS launched a new integrated system that replaced 49 legacy systems with one web-based platform. As CalPERS and the 2,500 agencies it serves adjust to the new system, please note there may be longer wait times when contacting the CalPERS toll-free telephone number (888-225-7377). CalPERS expects the wait times to improve in the next couple of weeks, so during this brief period, you may want to consider contacting CalPERS for critical issues only. The CSU was also advised that there may be a slight delay in CalPERS completing certain transactions on behalf of members. These transactions include health enrollments, service credit estimates, and service credit purchases.
CalPERS is sensitive to the needs of its members and is doing all it can to provide customer support during this brief adjustment period. If you have submitted your new health enrollment via e-Benefits or by completing a manual enrollment form and submitting it to the Benefits Office, CalPERS will process your health enrollment accordingly and coverage will be effective on the first of the month following the day your enrollment was submitted.
If you are a benefits-eligible new hire or returning faculty member that expected medical coverage to begin either on September 1, 2011, or October 1, 2011, and are in need of immediate medical coverage for you or your eligible dependents due to a critical need (i.e., treatment for a chronic or serious illness, prescription drug refill, etc.), please contact the Benefits Office for assistance at 619-594-1144.
We apologize for any inconvenience. We appreciate your cooperation.

The Benefits staff in Human Resources provides information and consultation on the various benefits options available to San Diego State University’s faculty and staff. On February 4, 2009, President Obama signed the Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2009 (CHIPRA) which extended the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP or most commonly CHIP) established under the Social Security Act. The Act also amends the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA) to provide for special enrollment rights, new notice and disclosure obligations, and penalties for noncompliance. The CHIPRA notice
includes information regarding potential opportunities currently available in the State in which the employee resides for group health plan premium assistance under Medicaid and CHIP. For additional information, please contact the Benefits Office at 619-594-1144.
On Tuesday, March 23, 2010, President Obama signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act into law. Although signed, the bill is subject to further review and interpretation. The Chancellor’s Office has begun the review of the health care bill to determine its impact to the CSU and will share information with campuses, as appropriate. This will take some time as the bill is complex and the Chancellor’s Office will need to work closely with CalPERS. In the interim, CalPERS is a great source of information regarding the health care bill. You are welcome to view the CalPERS’ statement on health care reform at the CalPERS Web site.
