Appendix 4: SDSU Characteristics and Environment

Founded in 1897, San Diego State University is the oldest and largest higher education institution in the San Diego region. The campus also offers classes at our Imperial Valley Campus. SDSU operates the Mount Laguna Observatory and manages four biological field stations totaling more than 9,000 acres.

 

A. Location / Geographic Characteristics

  • The SDSU campus consists of 283 acres, comprising approximately 3.065 million gross square feet of building interior within San Diego County. The campus is in the eastern section of the City of San Diego.

  • The university is bounded entirely by the City of San Diego and is located within the jurisdiction of the Mid-City Division of the San Diego Police Department.

 

B. Population Characteristics

  • The residence halls can house up to 3,500 residents depending on the time of year. There are 156 apartments in a in seven residential halls.
  • During peak hours — Monday through Thursday, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. — it’s estimated that the population on campus reaches approximately 35,000 to 36,000.
  • The number of faculty and staff during the same period includes 1,600 faculty and 1,200 employees.

 

C. Parking and Transportation

1. There are presently 10,000 parking spaces on campus.

2. There are six multilevel parking structures on campus at:

  • PS 1 — College Avenue at Alvarado Road
  • PS 2 — Between Hardy Avenue an
  • PS 4- North of Cox Arena
  • PS 5- 55th Street at Montezuma Road
  • PS 6- North of PS 3

3. The Transit Center (Trolley) located on the south portion of campus, serves approximately 2,000 passengers daily. The light rail system will enter the campus property at:
