Influenza Pandemic Planning

Updated: September 2009

San Diego State University is committed to protecting students faculty, and staff in the event of an influenza pandemic. The university is also committed to continuing normal operations as long as it is safe to do so. The information provided here is intended to raise case awareness of a potential health emergency; provide information that will assist individuals to protect themselves and their families; and to inform the campus community about university planning efforts.

Pandemic Planning Committee Convened

In 2006, a committee was formed with broad representation across the campus to form a plan for the university’s response to a potential health crisis. The plan is designed to be a sub-set of the university’s business continuity planning. Planning and monitoring activities in conjunction with county public health officials related to pandemic preparedness and response are ongoing.

Everyday Actions for Individuals

Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people. Everyday actions individuals can take to stay healthy include:

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way. Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

Updated Information

Updated campus information related to potential health concerns will be posted as necessary at Urgent Campus Information. Additional information on how to protect yourself and your family is also available through the County of San Diego.
