A. SIGNS

A completely filled out standard Biohazard placard must be displayed prominently at entrances to laboratories where biohazards are present and at entrances to tissue culture rooms. These placards, featuring fluorescent orange-red signs with lettering and symbols in contrasting colors, must specify the name of the biohazardous material in use, special requirements for entering and the name and telephone number of the PI or other responsible person(s). These placards are available free of charge from EHS. Call 619-594-2865 to receive your placard.

B. LABELS

Fluorescent orange-red labels displaying the international biohazard symbol and the legend “biohazard” or “biohazardous waste” in contrasting colors must be attached to containers of biohazards and biohazardous waste, respectively.

Red bags and sharps containers must be labeled with “SDSU, 5500 Campanile Drive, San Diego, CA 92182,” and the EHS telephone number: “619-594-6778.” This is a legal requirement of San Diego County. These labels are available free of charge from EHS. Call 619-594-2865 to obtain labels. Labels can also be made by the individual laboratory as long as the required information is indicated on the label.

Please note that biohazardous waste red bags or sharps containers must be labeled prior to use. It is NOT acceptable to San Diego County inspectors that labeling be applied just before disposal.

Red bags and sharps containers should be purchased by the individual laboratory.
