BIOHAZARD CONTROL PROGRAM

Part X:
Animals in Research

A. USE OF ANIMALS IN RESEARCH

B. DISPOSAL OF BIOHAZARDOUS ANIMALS AND ANIMAL CARCASSES

A. USE OF ANIMALS IN RESEARCH

The use of animals in research requires compliance with the Animal Welfare Act and any state or local regulations covering the care and use of animals. Vertebrate animal BSL criteria must be adhered to where appropriate. All work with animals involving the use of R-DNA and/or infectious or transmissible agents must be submitted to the IBC for review and approval in addition to approval from IACUC. Specific details (e.g., animal handling, transportation, housing, waste disposal, etc.) related to the biohazard must be worked out with the BSO prior to initiation of experiments requiring ABSL 2 or ABSL 3 containment.

B. DISPOSAL OF BIOHAZARDOUS ANIMALS AND ANIMAL CARCASSES

Animals must be disposed of by a contractor approved to haul infectious waste. Biohazardous animal carcasses will be incinerated at the contractor site.
