For questions not covered below, use the Associated Press (AP) Stylebook. SDSU has adopted this reference as the university's official style manual for publications targeting media and other external and internal audiences. All SDSU communications professionals should keep an updated copy of the AP Stylebook on their desks. Faculty or staff writing for scholarly publications, however, should comply with specified academic style manuals.

Technical Usage

  • CD-ROM: hyphenated and all caps.
  • cell phone: two words.
  • database: one word.
  • dot-com: use a hyphen in this generic term for businesses operating on the Internet.
  • DVD: all caps.
  • e-mail: hyphenated and lower case.
  • home page: two words; the front or main page of a Web site.
  • Internet: capitalized or "the Net" (but "intranet" is lower case).
  • login, logon, logoff: one word, no hyphen, lowercase.
  • offline, online: one word, no hyphen.
  • URL: All caps; an acronym for "uniform resource locator," an Internet address. In running text, URLs (and e-mails) may be enclosed in angle brackets to avoid confusion with other punctuation: "The university's Web site is <www.sdsu.edu>, and the webmaster’s e-mail address is <webmaster@sdsu.edu>." If a Web site does not use a conventional "www" address, the "http://" should be included in references to the address: <http://advancement.sdsu.edu>.
  • World Wide Web: Capitalize; a global system of linking documents, images, sounds and other files across the Internet. Related terms:
    • "the Web," "Web site" and "Web page" are two words; capitalize "Web."
    • "webcam," "webcast" and "webmaster" are one word and lower case.
