Access Cards & Keys

There are two types of access control at SDSU; keys and access control.  The keys issued by Key Issue are for academic buildings, not for housing or the campus auxiliaries.  In many instances faculty, staff and students may need a mixture of both to perform their responsibilities and academic requirements.

Access Cards

Access to buildings and doors through the access control system is added to your SDSU card.   If you only need access control and no keys the Departmental Designee may request access for your SDSU Card,  via email to Key Issue.  Should you need both keys and access control you will need to go directly to Key Issue.  Please see below for procedure.

Additional access control cards are not authorized without prior approval from the Access Control Systems Coordinator.

Keys

In order for faculty, staff and students to obtain keys they must have a SDSU Card, an SDSU email and a “Key Issue Authorization Form” filled out by the department authorizing the key and have the signature of the authorized signer.  Only the Vice President, Dean, Director or Designee of the Department, College, Division or Auxiliary is authorized to sign for keys.  To obtain keys, only the individual requiring the keys may be issued the keys.

Signature Authorization Forms

Keys require a signature from the Vice President, Dean, Director or Designee of the Department, College, Division or Auxiliary.  In order to ensure authenticity, we will require each authorized signer submit a “Signature Authorization Form.”  Should there be departmental changes, please ensure new forms are sent to Key Issue.

Lost/Stolen Keys

Report all lost/stolen keys immediately to SDSU Police Department.  To replace any keys lost/stolen, you will need to resubmit a new "Key Issue Authorization Form" with the authorized signature for your department and present your SDSU Red Id Card.

Students are responsible for all lost key fees.  The department is responsible for all keys lost by faculty, staff, TA and GAs.  Should your keys be stolen and the appropriate police report is filed, there will be no fees assessed.

Broken Keys

Broken keys should be returned to Key Issue.  Should part of the key break inside the cylinder, contact Facilities Services immediately.  To replace any broken key, you will need to resubmit a new "Key Issue Authorization Form" with the authorized signature for your department and present your SDSU Red Id Card.

 

Return of Keys

All faculty, staff and students are required to return all keys upon separation form the university, move to another department or due date (TA, GA, & Students).  Should the faculty, staff, TA or GA not return keys, the department who authorized the keys will be responsible for all fees associated for keys not returned.  Students will be responsible for all fees for keys turned in late or not returned.  Registrations holds will be placed on students who fail to pay this fee.

There is a drop box and envelopes supplied outside of Key Issue for your convenience. If you do not want to stand in line or come after hours you can use this option.  Write the information requested on the envelope, place the keys in envelope, seal and place in the drop box.
